Who is God to
you? Which name do you call God in your time of need? Names are much more than
something we call each other given to distinguish one person from another.
Names (good or bad) are loaded with emotion and meaning and are very important
to us. We take great care in choosing names for our children, our businesses,
our organizations and our pets! As important as names are to us in our culture,
they were even more significant in biblical times. In the Bible, the many names
of God express His character, nature, and ways.
Moses asked God
His name, the Hebrew word translated as “name”
in verse 13 is “shem.”
It can be a synonym for “reputation” or “fame.” Moses – and the rest of the
Hebrews – needed a sense of God’s character and power.
“Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them,
‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his
name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” Exodus 3:13,
NIV.
Who is God to

Or is He Jehovah-Shalom, your Prince of Peace? Discover who God is by
expounding upon His great Name. Somebody
said that you cannot trust, whom you do not know, this the very reason why God
wants us to know Him. He has been revealing Himself to us so that we will grow
in trusting Him. Knowing God will not only build our faith but it will also
strengthen our confidence in facing life. The many beautiful names of God
reveal something about WHO He is and WHY He functions the way He does.
This
Life Group material series “God is my…” specifically designed to help us and our Life Group focus
on our relationship with God based on His revelation as we study together the 9
covenant Names of God. These selected Names of God reveal not only His nature,
but His intent in what He wants to do with those who have a personal
relationship with Him. Spend time at the
truths these Names reveal about God, and how this knowledge should practically
impact our everyday decisions, emotions, and relationship to God and to others.
Join us as we get to know God more fully and spend
time adoring Him for who He is. God shows Himself to us through His Names
because of His great love for us. We, in turn, have the privilege of loving,
worshipping and resting in Him on an even deeper level during this reflective
time of year.
J.I. Packer
“For what higher, more exalted, and more compelling goal
can there be than to know God?” .
Jeremiah 9:23-24
23 “This is
what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the
strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast
about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises
kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,"
declares the LORD.”
